ANATOLIAN
SHEPHERDS![]() "Waltzing Tulah" and "Shenandoah Rebel" are our two Anatolian Shepherd dogs. These are our livestock guardians, property protectors and companions. Tulah and Rebel roam our 70 acre farm keeping themselves busy with the sheep, horses and children. When there is no threat present they believe in a good wrestle followed by a much deserved nap. The Anatolian Shepherd evolved to its present conformation while isolated in rural areas of Turkey where it is called upon to protect flocks from predation. In Turkey today the breed is known as Coban Kopegi (cho-bawn ko-pay) which translates to "Shepherds Dog". The extraordinary speed and agility of the ASD enable him to run down a predator with great efficiency. Make no mistake these are big dogs. Tulah at 18 months is 100lbs with a lot of room to fill out while Rebel is beyond his growth expectations weighing in at 125lbs at only 8 months old. Anatolians are fiercely loyal and demonstrate a possessive attitude toward family, livestock and property. They are suspicious of strangers, reserved when in public and may require a formal introduction before accepting any familiarities. Anatolians are affectionate with family and tend to be gentle with children, tending to consider them part of their flock. The independent nature of the Anatolian Shepherd combined with its large size may make it not the easiest dog to control. A perfect Anatolian is self confident but deferential to the leader. These dogs should be socialized well if expected to come into contact with a lot of strange animals or people. The key to successful ownership is understanding the needs and abilities of this remarkable breed. They are intelligent dogs, devoted to their owners, gentle and protective of their charges and fearless when a threat arises. It is awesome that these two dogs are a piece of history dating back to biblical times. Constant observers of their domain. |
